https://www.bromptonforum.net/discussions-techniques-f3/conseils-pour-demontage-du-triangle-arriere-t1980-20.htm?sid=ef4cfb4bd2ff9bb6ab60d16a2ccae11d

http://www.bromptonauten.de/technisches/hinterbau.html
Traduite en anglais en PDF ici:
http://ccgi.peteramey.plus.com/pages/bicycles/Brompton Rear Hinge Overhaul.PDF

Instructions for overhauling the rear hinge on a Brompton folding bicycle
Brompton's kit, part number "QRHBKIT", contains a new pivot pin, two bushes, two plastic washers, two
countersunk head machine screws, a 4mm allen key and a ¼ inch drill bit - GBP13 from St John Street Cycles
(http://www.sjscycles.com/store/vIndex.htm) in Sept 2003 (not to be confused with kit "QRHKIT" which is the
same but without the bushes). You will also need a crank remover tool to remove the RH crank and chain-wheel,
a hair dryer or hot air gun, possibly an electric drill, a 3/8 inch diameter reamer, thread locking solution (e.g.
locktite) and some grease.
Disconnect the rear brake and gear cables and the dynamo wires from the rear.
Remove the right hand crank and chain-wheel, roll the chain up out of the way near the rear wheel hub and wrap
it in a plastic bag to keep it clean and lay the bike on it's left side so that the opposite end of the hinge pin can be
supported on a block of wood.
• Heat the area around the allen head machine screw in the end of the hinge pin as hot as you can get with an
electric hair dryer. (Or use a hot air gun, but do take care not to damage anything with excessive heat) .
• When the area is hot, use a high quality 4mm allen key, with extended leverage if necessary, to slacken the
screw. You may have to tap it with a mallet or a block of wood. The objective is to free the screw from the
thread-locking compound used in factory assembly. The heat softens the compound.
• If you loosen the screw, unscrew it a few turns only, turn the bike over and try the other side using the same
method. The problem with the second one is that if the pin starts to rotate the screw cannot be removed. The
first bolt can be re-tightened to hold the pin before working on the second one, but then you have to hope
you can slacken it again.
• If you can't remove the screws then they must be drilled out, using the ¼" drill in the kit, to remove the bolt
head, but take care to ensure swarf does not get in any moving parts.
• Once both screws are removed the rear frame can be moved to one side and the old pin pushed out.
Remove the two old bushes. This is not easy as they are inserted up against a shoulder so there is nothing to push
on. However, the bushes are of a split design and with a small nail punch placed at an angle against the edge of
the bush next to the split it is possible to bend part of the bush inwards and so freeing it.
Clean out the frame and remove any burrs created when using the nail punch to remove the old bushes. The new
bushes need to be inserted and then reamed out to the correct size as explained below.
The correct Brompton special reamer for reaming the bushes once they are in is part number "QRHREAM"
which will cost you GBP194 !!! This is a special reamer with a pilot spigot to ensure it is lined up correctly
before it starts removing metal. However, a normal 3/8" reamer, which will cost GBP11 if you can't borrow one,
can be used if you follow these instructions:
• After removing the old bushes, tap in just one of the new ones carefully with a hammer using a small block
of hard wood over the bush to protect it, or preferably, use a length of 8mm diameter studding with nuts and
washers, passed through the frame, to press the bush into place.
• This first bush should be hand reamed using the 3/8" reamer by inserting the reamer through the other side
of the frame using a piece of split plastic tube to ensure the reamer is perfectly central in the frame before
you start removing material from the new bush. Remove reamer and check the new pin for size.
• Press in the second bush.
• Insert the reamer carefully through the already reamed bush, rotating it anticlockwise if necessary to ease it
through without removing any material, so it reaches through the frame to ream the second bush.
Grease the new bushes and the new pivot pin with grease, but do not allow any grease to get on the threads in the
ends of the pivot pin or on the machine screws. Now insert the new pin, slip the plastic washers over the ends of
the pin, offer up the rear half of the frame and insert the two machine screws. Once you are sure everything is
OK, remove the machine screws one at a time taking care that the two parts of the frame remain aligned, apply a
little locktite to the threads and re-insert. Tighten the screws to 10Nm (7.4 lbs. Ft.) torque. Reassemble the crank,
chain, cables and wires. Do not ride the bike until the following day to allow time for the locktite to set.
